Youth Day And Youth To Washington
Tour
Each Spring Menard Electric Cooperative takes a group of high school students to
Springfield to tour the State Capitol and spend the morning meeting with their
local legislators. It's called Youth
Day and this year occurs March 28, 2012. Students attending schools in our area are eligible for Youth Day, regardless of who provides their home with electricity.
Two students who attend Youth Day and whose parents are members of Menard Electric Cooperative, will be chosen for an all-expenses
paid trip to Washington D.C. based on an application, short essay questions and a personal interview. This year's trip will be June 15-22, 2012.
On the Youth to Washington Tour more than 60 students from Illinois will travel
together and meet Illinois congressmen, tour many historic sites, receive
information on career paths, learn about cooperatives and make lifelong friends.
It is truly a remarkable trip that has been sponsored for more than 50 years by electric
and telephone cooperatives across the United States.
In the past, participants have visited such places as Gettysburg; Arlington National Cemetery; the Iwo Jima, Lincoln,
Jefferson, Korean War, Vietnam War, World War II, U.S. Marine Corps. and
Franklin Delano Roosevelt Memorials; the Washington Monument; The Newseum,
Holocaust, Smithsonian Air and Space, American History and Natural History
Museums; the Saudi Arabia Embassy; and the National Archives. Students will also
see the U.S. Capitol Building and meet Illinois Congressmen, Senators and their
staffs.
